COLUMBUS, Ohio — The D'Youville women's volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday at Alumni Hall, falling to Ohio Dominican, 3-0, before responding with a five-set victory over West Va. Wesleyan, 3-2.
The Saints opened the day against Ohio Dominican, dropping the match by set scores of 25-11, 25-22 and 25-19. D'Youville battled back throughout the second and third sets, including a 20-20 tie in the second and a 14-14 deadlock in the third, but Ohio Dominican closed each set with late runs.
Cameron Ulinski led the Saints with seven kills and nine digs, while Madeline O'Brien added six kills, an ace and two block assists. Lauren Scully contributed eight digs and two aces, while Ashley Ballou recorded three kills, 10 assists and four digs.
D'Youville responded in its second match of the day, defeating West Va. Wesleyan in five sets, 25-15, 25-22, 15-25, 22-25 and 15-12.
The Saints controlled the opening two sets before West Va. Wesleyan forced a deciding fifth set. D'Youville took a 9-7 lead in the fifth and extended its advantage to 14-8 behind back-to-back aces from Ballou and a kill from Maddie Boglev. After West Va. Wesleyan pulled within two, Ulinski delivered the match-clinching kill off a Ballou assist to secure the 15-12 victory.
O'Brien paced the Saints with 11 kills, 11 digs and four aces for 16 points, while Ulinski finished with 11 kills, nine digs and three aces for 15 points. Scully collected a team-high 16 digs, and Giselle Ramirez recorded six kills and a team-best six blocks.
The Saints finished Saturday with a 1-1 record and posted three wins on the weekend.
Up next for D'Youville, they'll travel to Springfield, Mass., to take on American International College on Sept. 11.
