Been there. Done that.
But Dan Magnuszewski means that in the best possible way. Because he has lived it – and he’s on a mission to put his hard-earned experiences to work to uplift others. And, in turn, the Buffalo community.
“I want to be a part of the reason why we start seeing an abundance of brand-new companies here in Buffalo,” says Dan, who has had a hand in building and founding startups along with work on software development, product development and venture capital.
“The goal is to create successful and exciting startups that people want to work at,” he adds. “By having these attractive opportunities, it not only helps retain talent, but it can also help to bring back people who may have left Buffalo for a variety of economic reasons.”
That’s all in the job description now for Dan, who was named CEO of 43North Foundation’s venture studio in October. The venture studio is one of four key investment areas in Lightning Strike, a 10-year, $100 million plan launched in May to seize momentum and supercharge Western New York’s tech and startup ecosystem in a way that’s equitable and built to last.
“Our sole purpose is to help Buffalo grow and succeed,” says Dan, a Sweet Home High School and University at Buffalo graduate. “That’s the core of what we’re doing.”
A longtime figure on the local startup scene, Dan cofounded ACV Auctions, a platform for auto dealers that won the 43North competition in 2016. It then became Upstate New York’s first unicorn, the distinction given to startups valued at $1 billion or more.
Dan’s next challenge: building a system to scale that success by finding, shepherding and empowering Buffalo’s next wave of potential unicorns.
He has named the studio Radial Ventures. At its core, it is a company that builds new companies – turning ideas into a reality that resonates far beyond its origins. A mechanism for strategy, shared learnings and accelerating go-to-market timelines.
A growth engine that, to Dan, means “more jobs, more opportunity, more wealth creation, and regional stability.”
“Radial Ventures is more than just a name; it’s a statement of intent,” he says. “It speaks to the studio’s role as a catalyst for change, a center for innovative thinking, and a launchpad for businesses designed to make a meaningful impact.”
As Dan sets out on the first phase of Radial Ventures – building an experienced team with a solid track record – it’s with laser-sharp focus on the mission and an expert balance of patience and urgency.
Knowing the focus and needs of Radial Ventures will evolve over time along with the companies in its portfolio, Dan’s laying the groundwork now that enables quick action and agility (a practice that benefits every early-stage startup).
“How do we build a platform that allows us to build great companies faster than anyone thought we could? How can we take ideas that potentially would have just stayed in someone’s head, never materialized, and turn it into a successful venture?” Dan says. “Now there’s an outlet for that, and we can be the conduit.”
With the low probabilities of a new startup actually succeeding, the real benefit of a Venture Studio is reducing a lot of the risk that inherently comes with starting a company. Risks that Dan and his team are intimately familiar with, having been there and done that.
“Dan easily could have gone in a different direction and pursued other opportunities,” says Bill Maggio, board chair of the 43North Foundation and board chair emeritus of 43North. “Instead, he decided to double down and give back in the best way possible and help our community.”
10 years. $100 million. One moment.
There are four key components to a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem. Here is where the 43North Foundation will focus its investment to help seize a unique opportunity and ensure Western New York’s ecosystem is equitable and built to last.
Talent pipeline
Fueling long-term success of startups and established companies by enabling programs that integrate tech and entrepreneurship skills from “K through Gray,” including a push to attract and retain college talent.
Venture Studio
Building high-growth companies that are deeply rooted in Western New York, where promising business ideas are put into the hands of a dream team of proven builders.
Corporate Connectivity
Fostering a culture of regional collaboration by engaging employers with hands-on learning and practical programming that showcase how businesses benefit from a thriving, collaborative ecosystem.
Storytelling
Creating wide-scale understanding of the impact and growing opportunity for the community through a sustained effort to get loud about the region’s growing digital economy and startup ecosystem.
