Female Athlete of the Week: Wang has bright future after Section VI tennis win

  • 0

Eileen Wang is on top of the local high school tennis world after her win last weekend in the Section VI championships.

Get used to that idea. The eighth grader, who played for Williamsville North, should be getting even better in the years to come.

Wang won the title in a three-set match on Saturday. She matched the accomplishment of older brother Harry, who won the sectional title as an eighth-grader in 2013.

It is on to the State championship for Wang next week in Port Chester, Long Island. In the meantime, she is the Prep Talk Female Athlete of the Week.

School: Casey Middle School in Williamsville

Year: Eighth grade

Coach Jerry Moote’s comments: “Eileen’s play was spectacular, particularly in the final match on Saturday against Orchard Park’s Madigan Hummiston. After splitting sets, Wang was down, 1-3, in the third set before raising her level of play and defeating Hummiston 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.”

Tell us about your week: “I practiced from Tuesday to Thursday to get ready for Sectionals, and I got through the first three rounds pretty easily. My finals match was a battle, but I ended up pulling through and winning.”

How has your season gone so far? “I played each school's player at least once, and I was undefeated during this season of high school tennis.”

Highlight of athletic career so far: “Winning sectionals for my school this year.”

Favorite thing about my sport: “You aren't just good based on how hard you hit or how fast you run, the game is one of mental, physical, and emotional strength.”

Favorite teammate: “All my teammates are amazing, but when I played doubles last year with Erin Lippa, our second singles, she was honestly a riot and all in all a great partner.”

Toughest opponent: “I think I am my own toughest opponent. Most matches I lose are because I get distracted and lose my focus on the points.”

Athlete I admire: “(Pro tennis player) Garbine Muguruza. She made a great leap on rankings in the past year and is honestly an inspiration in the way she plays and competes.”

When I’m not playing or practicing my sport…: “I can be seen joking around with my friends. I also like to draw.”

What’s ahead: “I recently aged up in USTA (United States Tennis Association) Standards, and I am working on going to tournaments and climbing the rankings there.”

Honor Roll

Abby Enfield, field hockey, Akron: Her goal held up in a 1-0 win over Roy-Hart that gave the Tigers a perfect season at 12-0.

Alyssa Helak, swimming, Williamsville North: Won two events, 200 free and 100 back, in the ECIC Championships on Saturday.

Kelly Fellner, volleyball, Lancaster: Her 11 kills led the Legends in their win over West Seneca West that gave Lancaster a share of the ECIC title for the first time since 2009.
