Having made the NFL playoffs in two of coach Sean McDermott's first three seasons, the Bills "are back on the map," McDermott said during an interview with NFL Network's "Good Morning Football" on Wednesday.
Asked what the Bills need to do to take the next step, McDermott said: "It takes a real humble approach You see teams up one year and down the next. Our goal is to make sure that we approach it the right way mentally. We’ve got flush last year in an appropriate manner and then move on to this year. It’s a new season and it’s going to be a new team in 2020 for the Buffalo Bills, like it is for very team. It comes back to our humble approach since day one."
The Bills have significant salary cap space and have the ability to add free agents when the league year begins next month.
McDermott said he had the same message to free agents, draft picks and even current players: “We’ve got a tremendous culture and a tremendous locker room. It’s really about a transformational type of culture and locker room as opposed to transactional. You come to Buffalo and you will become the best version of you that you’ve ever been before on the field and the off the field. … That’s what we’ve done and it’s a credit to everyone in our building.”

While what happens with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots remains uncertain, the Bills figure to contend for the AFC East.
“I don’t know exactly what’s going to happen. No one has a crystal ball," McDermott said. "I know where we’ve come from. I know the work that’s been put in and I know we’ve got a passionate fan base unlike most in the NFL. With good people in your building, great fan base and a heck of an atmosphere on game day, it’s a great foundation moving forward for our football team.”
Asked to close the interview with a message to Bills fans, McDermott said, "Let’s Go, Bills Mafia. It’s a great marriage right now in Buffalo with our football team and the way we’re building it and a blue-collar approach and our fan base and our city. … We try to do things the right way and the fans in Buffalo respect that and we’re giving them an opportunity and a reason to watch us every week whether it’s at home or on the road. Our fans travel unlike some teams in the NFL. I’m biased, but I think we’ve got the best fans in the league.”
