Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott watches his team from the sideline in the first quarter at Soldier Field in Chicago on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2021.

Here is a sampling of what Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott told reporters after the team's 41-15 victory against the Chicago Bears on Saturday at Soldier Field:

Overall: “Great effort. Guys were ready to play and to continue with that effort in the second half after the first half we had. We got off to a good start, and played well in all three phases. I thought some guys stepped up, guys that you don’t hear a lot about. Reggie Gilliam carrying the ball at the end and two big returns from Isaiah and Speedy.”

On not getting too high about the preseason: “It’s good to be excited at the same time we have a lot of work to do. A lot from this game that we can learn from and improve on. That’s why we practice. We’re back on the field tomorrow and in the building. Got to be able to stay consistent in this league or else it will eat you up.”

On Mitch Trubisky: “He came out and ready to play. It’s hard to do what he did, whether preseason or regular season, soon after leaving here. He’s a great person and a great addition to our team. He’s out to improve every day and we’re happy to have him and his family in Buffalo.

“Brandon (Beane) and his staff did a great job with Mitch and getting him to Buffalo. It takes two. You gotta want to be somewhere and Mitch wanted to be in Buffalo as he has said numerous times. It says a lot about who he is as a person and what he’s looking for and how he wants to go about his business. … He went out there and executed. He did his 1/11th. Mitch really embraces his role. He’s not an 'I' guy. He’s a team guy and we saw the results of that today.”

On young defensive line: “These games are always tough to decide who plays and who doesn’t decide and how much they play. The young guys need to play to get experience and improve, the more they can see the better off they’ll be. It was a good step for some of those guys up front. Some of those guys are young players so yeah, that’s good to see.”

On Isaiah McKenzie bouncing back after muffed punt: "When a player can go through a moment that he went through there and then reset mentally and stay on the field and have the ability to contribute during that series that says a lot. It’s hard to do. It’s something we talk about and a great example of him doing that in a key moment of the game.”

On Spencer Brown: “Spencer is a humble young man and it hasn’t been too big for him. He’s play left, right. He’s done some good things so hopefully he’s healthy enough to help us.”

On Reggie Gilliam: “Reggie is a real serious young man. Football is important to him. His role is important to him as well. … Happy to see him have success. He’s worked hard. He’s a team player. We got short a little bit on the backs and we knew going into the game he was going to need to be ready to go.”
