A birdwatcher’s paradise, Tifft Nature Preserve sports five miles of scenic trails and three boardwalks abutting one of the largest wetlands in Erie County. The perfect place for a quick walk on your lunch break, did you know Tifft also offers plenty of opportunities for longer guided hikes, as well as adult and family workshops? Put a little spring in your step and try one of these exciting, educational and energizing offerings:
National Day of Unplugging (All Ages)
Unplug and reconnect as Tifft Nature Preserve, Buffalo Audubon Society, Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve and Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens join together to celebrate the annual National Day of Unplugging. After tucking your cellphone to sleep in a free “sleeping bag,” enjoy a walk on the Tifft trails, indoor make ’n’ take crafts and fun activities with WNY’s regional nature centers. Saturday, March 2, from 2-4 p.m. Free event.
SciNight Workshop: Art of the Birds (Ages 18+)
Paint, sketch and photograph live birds of prey during an indoor art workshop with Messinger Woods Wildlife Care! Get an introduction to America’s great avian artists, plus sit and capture live owls, hawks and falcons with paint, pencil or photography. Birds will be presented for 30-minute time blocks and limited art materials will be available to borrow. A portion of proceeds go towards Messinger Woods Wildlife Care’s nonprofit mission. First Day of Spring Full Moon Hike (Ages 5+)
Watch nature getting ready to rest and awaken at night as you enjoy the sun setting and the full moon rising on a guided night hike. Afterwards, take a closer look at the night sky and view the moon through a telescope, uncover the reasons for the seasons and get a sneak peek of springtime stars (weather permitting). Wednesday, March 20, 7:30-9 p.m. Advance registration required. Cost: $6 (Buffalo Museum of Science members save 10%).
SciNight Workshop: Poetry in the Particulars (Ages 18+)
Spend an evening enjoying the writings of the late poet Mary Oliver, then try your hand at crafting poetry of your own. Walk the Preserve (weather permitting), then spend time indoors crafting and discussing poetry with poet, essayist and University of Buffalo faculty, Jamie Barber. Jamie Barber has an MFA from Penn State University and has written and published poetry and essays, and taught writing workshops in the U.S. and India. Tuesday, April 9, 7-8:30 p.m. Advance registration required. Cost: $12 (Buffalo Museum of Science members save 10%).
Wellness Walks (All ages)
More of a last-minute planner? Just drop by Tifft Nature Preserve any Thursday for a casual volunteer-led tour of the Preserve. Please call 716-825-6397 to confirm walk will be taking place. Every Thursday, 10 a.m.-noon. A $2 donation per person is appreciated.
