We're live at the Buffalo State Sports Arena for the second of four Far West Regional playoff games, a long but fun day.
Game No. 2 is in Class B, and its got an unusual distinction: it's a rematch of last year's game. Section VI champion Olean beat Section V winner Charlotte, a Rochester city school, last season at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua. Much of …
We're live at the Buffalo State Sports Arena for the first of four Far West Regional playoff games. I love my job.
The day starts with the Class C game between Maple Grove of Section VI (Buffalo area) and East Rochester of Section V. In our online poll, it was nearly a 50-50 split of the 39 voters, with 51.3 percent picking ER.
I'm covering this game for Monday's paper,…
One advantage to having the remaining four regionals held Sunday is that we'll know the opponents ahead of time.
Here's who and when Sunday's regional winners will play at Glens Falls Civic Center at the final four:
Class C: West Canada Valley (25-0) of Section III (Syracuse area) at 1:30 p.m Friday.
Class B: Chenango Valley (17-5) of Section IV (Binghamton area) at 6:45…
Saturday's lineup of three Far West Regional games has been postponed to Sunday.
There will now be four games on Sunday at Buffalo State. Friday night's Class A game was also postponed due to inclement weather.
Sunday's games are divided into two sessions.
Session one: Class C, noon and Class B, 1:45 p.m. Session two: Class A, 6 p.m. and Class AA, 7:45 p.m.
Northstar Christian of Section V was a little late getting to Buffalo State due to the snowstorm, but they're here and we'll be tipping off the Class D Far West Regional soon. Northstar Christian will take on Pine Valley.
6:09 p.m. There's two minutes left to count down to pregame ceremonies.
6:12 p.m. The principal of Northstar Christian just stepped to the microphone t…
We're going to have one Far West Regional boys basketball playoff game at Buffalo State tonight. The other four, thanks to today's snowstorm, could be headed to Sunday.
Tonight's Class D game between Pine Valley and Northstar Christian of the Rochester suburb of Gates remains on schedule for a 6 p.m. tipoff as both teams are en route to Buffalo State.
The Class A game b…
And I thought picking sectional games was tough.
It's certainly much tougher when you know a lot more about one team than the other. High school sports reporters might have seen an out-of-town team here or there, or we may have read a story or two from our colleagues throughout the state, but it's extremely difficult trying to pick games between teams you're familiar wit…
Class D means charming teams from the farmland. Tiny-sized schools
that when they get this far, there's hardly anyone left in town because
they're all at the game. We're talking "Hoosiers."
Well, not in Section

At this time of year, when we write previews of regional play, we've got to do some research on the teams that Western New York schools will be going up against. If you want some more details on the opponents, here's where our google-ing took us in preparation for our stories.

From the start of the basketball season, there's always one question that will come up throughout the season: Which Section VI teams can make it to Glens Falls?
Well, we'll find out this weekend.
Buffalo State hosts five regional games, beginning with the Class D and A games in a doubleheader Friday night. On Saturday, an afternoon session consists of the Class C and B…
The five Section VI girls basketball teams are hoping this year's trip to Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua goes better than their last visit. In 2006, Section V (Rochester area) teams swept the local teams, 5-0. Last year, only one Section VI advanced to the final four (East Aurora, which won the state championship in Class B).
Here's Saturday's lineup:B: Ole…
My seventh annual boys basketball Championship Week wrap-up appeared in today's paper, and there's an expanded edition on the Web.
But I'm just one basketball fan. We'd love to hear from some more of you. Got any favorite moments? Plays? Players? Have your own idea of a all-tournament team or MVP?
St. Joe's will be playing its Catholic state semifinal against Chaminade at St. Dominic High in Oyster Bay, Long Island, but fans will be able to listen to the Marauders' 3 p.m. Saturday game live on the internet.
As he did with selected home games as well as the Manhattan Cup playoffs, Andrew Spitler will do play-by-play from courtside. Go to the St. Joe's Web site for …
The Section V (Rochester area) representatives for this weekend's Far West Regionals are set for both boys and girls basketball. The winners of each game earn a trip to the state public school final four in Glens Falls.

Well, one out of two isn't bad. I thought Olean would be too much for City Honors but picked McKinley to beat East. Looks like I'm as good at this as I am filling out my annual last-place NCAA Tournament bracket. Baddump-bump.
A few thoughts gathered shortly after I scraped off my ice-glazed car in the Buffalo State parking lot:
Class A: East 57, McKinley 38
