I have to agree Allen Wilson's objective take on the Wilfork hit on Losman. It doesn't seem like an intentional intent to injure to me. The replays show that Wilfork had burst through the line and was being tackled by Melvin Fowler in a desperate attempt to keep him away from the quarterback. Wilfork was falling forward and lunged at J.P. with his right elbow. Now you coul…

As the Bills struggle to put an NFL-caliber defense on the field, you really have to wonder about the wisdom of carrying so many players simply because of their value to special teams. The Bills are paper thin at linebacker, and yet they have two veteran linebackers -- Mario Haggan and Josh Stamer -- who can't be trusted to play defense. They're around solely for their spe…

It's hard to take shots at the Bills' defense after all the injuries, but there are still some players who should be performing at a higher level. Who has been getting the biggest free pass during the 0-3 start: 1) Aaron Schobel. 2) Chris Kelsay. 3) Larry Tripplett. 4) Kyle Williams?

As of 1:45 this afternoon, no word on who the Bills will bring in to play backup quarterback. Craig Nall is an obvious choice, because he knows the system. Nall wasn't happy when the Bills let him go, but I suspect he would put aside any resentments to pull in an NFL salary for a short period of time. Maybe they'll make Roscoe Parrish the QB! They have to get the ball in h…

The latest league statistics would seem to suggest they are. The Bills are now 32nd and dead last in both offense and defense. That's a hard thing to accomplish in today's NFL. Even more amazing, they're last in both passing AND rushing defense. Generally, a team that's bad on one side of the ball has average stats in the other because teams pound away in one area.  T…

J.P. Losman wants to open up the passing game today. I'm not sure this is the ideal spot to do it.  They might be playing into New England's hands. But maybe the coaches should give Losman his wish and let him come out flinging -- maybe even play the no-huddle -- and see how he does. Let him sink or swim if he's so intent on attacking and letting it fly. Something tel…

I know we're not supposed to be critical of the Bills' young, injured defense. But it would help if Aaron Schobel, the $50 million man, started making more of a difference. The Bills haven't gotten much pass rush from their front four in the first two games. They have two sacks as a team -- one by McCargo and one by Schobel. Otherwise, Schobel hasn't been much of a factor.…

Hard to believe the Diamondbacks have the best record in the NL at 85-67. If the Dbacks split their last 10 games and the Mets continue their swoon, there's a good chance that no NL team will finish with more than 90 wins. That's a .557 winning percentage. Jack Gray of my crack research team tells me no team has led its league with a percentage that low in baseball history…

Interesting column on FOXSports.com, critical of NFL Players Association and director Gene Upshaw for failing to have more of a presence during the Kevin Everett situation. The author, Mark Kriegel, is one of the best reads around. Kriegel is the one-time New York Daily News columnist who has written acclaimed sports biographies on Joe Namath and Pete Maravich. He went to …

The weekly NFL stats are out, and it's as bleak as you could imagine for the Bills.  They're 31st in total offense (San Fran is last). They're 32nd in passing offense, 32nd in first downs, 30th in points (thanks to the Roscoe Parrish punt return). The defense is 31st overall (ahead of Cleveland, which won a game), 30th against the run, tied for 30th in first downs all…

Another bit of bad news for a Bills team that has had more than its share this week. Josh Reed will not play today because of his quadriceps injury. Reed is nominally the third receiver, but  he was their best wideout in the opener and will be missed. J.P. Losman trusts Reed and tends to look for him in check-down situations. Reed rarely drops balls anymore, breaks ta…

The Sabres are getting roasted all over the hockey world for suspending Teppo Numminen after learning Numminen will have to undergo heart surgery. They deserve it, too. Yes, they're within their rights to suspend the veteran defenseman. More than heartless, it's another stupid and short-sighted move by an organization that has made far too many of those in recent months. …

Yeah, it was me that J.P. Losman snapped at after the opener. I asked him if he would have liked to have thrown downfield more against the Broncos and he said, "You're the expert, Buddy, right?Personally, I wasn't offended. I enjoy the odd exchange with an athlete or coach. Some day I'll post a list of my all-time favorites. But you'd expect more from an NFL quarterba…

It was a sad and uncommonly busy Monday afternoon at One Bills Drive. About three times more reporters and cameramen than usual were on hand -- including two staffers from ESPN -- to follow up the Kevin Everett story. Bills PR did a nice job, bringing four players to the microphone with special ties to Everett, who underwent surgery Sunday  night for a serious spinal …

A couple of interesting inactives for the Bills' opener against Denver: Duke Preston and Tim Anderson. We've known for some time that Anderson is a marginal NFl player. But it's not a good sign if he can't make the active list on this defense. This means the Bills will probably go to a three man tackle rotation, with Jason Jefferson getting occasional snaps as the No. …
