Lyle Menendez secretly married his pen pal girlfriend during a proxy ceremony the day he was sentenced to life in prison for killing his parents, his attorney said Friday.
Superior Court Judge Nancy Brown presided over the 40-minute wedding, which Lyle and his brother and best man, Erik, attended via telephone conference call.
The judge, bride Anna Eriksson and the brothers' aunt gathered July 2 in the office of defense attorney Leslie Abramson, who slipped the ring over the bride's finger on the groom's behalf. The brothers were in prison 8 miles away.
"We all had tears when Lyle said, 'This is the happiest day of my life,' " Ms. Abramson said. "It was very nice."
Anna Eriksson Menendez, 30, has regularly visited her 29-year-old husband in the California Correctional Institution at Tehachapi.
Since Menendez was sentenced to life in prison without parole, he does not qualify for conjugal visits with his wife. The judge had to grant permission for Lyle Menendez to apply for a marriage license, which was sealed as a confidential document because "we didn't want a media circus," Ms. Abramson said.
