A scavenger hunt will have teams roaming over much of Penn Dixie's 54 acres Saturday in search of the "golden fossil."
The Penn Dixie Fossil Park and Nature Reserve will open for two sessions of hunting Saturday, one at 10 a.m. to noon and one at 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Registration closes at 4:59 p.m. Friday for the five-member teams that will cross fossil pits, forests and wetlands on the giant scavenger hunt. In addition to local flora and fauna — past and present — up to 80 teams will compete for prizes.
Individual tickets are $10 for those 3 and older, while a team of five is $40 for Penn Dixie members and $45 for non-members. Hunters will receive commemorative bags and can keep all fossils and tokens collected during the search.
The site of a former cement quarry, Penn Dixie, 4050 North St., Hamburg, was ranked as the top fossil park in the country in 2011.
