A 15-month-old boy was sent to Oishei Children's Hospital in Buffalo with serious facial injuries after he was attacked by a dog Friday afternoon, Niagara Falls Police said.

The boy, a city resident, was being watched by a woman inside her Pierce Avenue home around noon Friday when a year-old pit bull mix grabbed the child by the head and started "swinging (him) like a rag doll," the sitter told police. She was able to get the dog away from the child before emergency responders were called to the scene.

Police said the boy incurred "serious damage" to the left eye area, as well as bites to the left cheek. The dog was ordered confined to the home and the Niagara County Health Department was advised of the situation. No further information was provided.
