Dr. A. Alexander Drapanas, a Buffalo dentist and renowned forensic examiner, died Monday in Erie County Medical Center. He was 76.

Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Lafayette High School and the University of Buffalo, where he attended dental school after earning his undergraduate degree.

Dr. Drapanas established a private practice in comprehensive and reconstructive dentistry in 1963 and remained active at his Linwood Avenue office until his death. Nationally recognized as a forensic examiner, he was often called to serve as an expert witness in trials.

He was one of the first dentists to introduce dental implant therapy locally in 1970 and was one of the first in the area to adopt laser drilling techniques in the 1990s. He also was the Buffalo Bisons’ team dentist.

A lifelong athlete, he was a coxswain on the crew at Lafayette High School and at the West Side Rowing Club. For years, he was ranked regionally and nationally as a squash player, in both singles and doubles. In later years, he was a top-ranked local tennis player.

He also collected vintage automobiles. He raced a restored Jaguar XK-120 for several years. Later, he was active in the Sports Car Club of America D-sports class “formula” auto racing regionally.

An art collector, for several decades he was a benefactor and trustee of the Buffalo Society of Artists and hosted many of the society’s events in his home.

Surviving are his companion, Deborah Robbins; her daughter, Anastasia “Sia” Robbins; and three sisters, Georgia, Sophie Rauch and Tula Lucas.
