Thiel’s husband, Tim Colvin, died in October 2010 of cancer. He was 48. WNY Refresh shared the family story in its first issue in March 2013.

Both books address the challenges and triumphs of the Thiel-Colvin blended family, which includes a son the couple had together and Thiel’s three stepchildren, which she helped raise and now are young adults.
