Horror films take over the big screen

Halloween hits the big screen this week, as locally produced horror films are being unveiled at both Hertel Avenue’s North Park Theatre and in the Palace Theatre in Hamburg.

“A Grim Becoming” screens in the Palace Theatre (31 Buffalo St., Hamburg) at 11:59 p.m. Oct. 31, 3 p.m. Nov. 1 and at 1 p.m. Nov. 2. Shot around Western New York and featuring local talent and some genre vets, writer-director Adam Steigert’s film is the story of a young executive who witnesses the Grim Reaper stealing a soul.

Halloween night also sees the premiere of Ken Cosentino’s locally shot zombie flick “Within” in the North Park at 10 p.m. Check the film’s Facebook page for more info, and note that the premiere features a costume contest and after-party.

Both “Within” and “A Grim Becoming” look like a blast, so support your local filmmakers.

Meanwhile, at 7 p.m. Oct. 27, the next installment of the Nichols-sponsored Classic Film Series in the North Park features Tod Browning’s “Dracula.” The Bela Lugosi film features Philip Glass’ musical score performed by the Kronos Quartet.

One last screening this week is not a horror film, exactly, but does feature a unique connection to one of cinema’s most iconic monsters. Víctor Erice’s “The Spirit of the Beehive” set during the Spanish Civil War, tells the story of a young girl’s obsession with 1931’s “Frankenstein.”

The 1973 drama is a stunner, a somber, dream-like story of childhood innocence that is unquestionably a ‘70s milestone. This week’s Buffalo Film Seminars selection screens at 7 p.m. Oct. 28 in the Amherst Dipson Theatre.
