Bills

Ageless, brilliant-minded, Papa Hemingway-bearded Ryan Fitzpatrick, manned Miami’s ship-wheel again Sunday, trying to show young whip-armed Josh Allen a thing or two about big-game fishing. The Dolphins capsized and promptly sunk in South Florida. The Bills, in turn, righted their own ship with a sound searing of the Fins, 37-20. It was the first game in Allen’s enti…

Who was ultimately at fault for the Bills’ maddening, belly-wrenching, head-scratching, lunch-tossing 19-16 loss to the lowly Browns? I’ll tell you. Stephen Hauschka. Hauschka is no longer Hausch Money, he’s a bad bet. It is the first time many Bills fans have completely lost faith in the man of faith. The game-tying kick as time all but expired, even at 53 breezy…

Bills

By definition, “pay dirt” is the “ground containing ore in sufficient quantity to be profitably extracted.” In football parlance, it is reaching that hallowed ground of the end zone for a touchdown.  The Bills reached pay dirt three times against the Redskins on Sunday, without allowing Washington to mine that ore once, in a strangely unsatisfying 15-point win, 24-9.  …

Analysis

Swirling winds topping 40 miles an hour whipped through New Era Field on Sunday and blew the lid and shine off the Bills’ previous lofty, second-in-the-AFC record.   Buffalo is neither as good as 5-1 might indicate, nor as bad as the 31-13 drubbing by the Eagles might, either.  No unit, coach, or player fared well. The Bills were dominated on both sides of the ball, …

Bills

The Buffalo Bills came off a bye week out of practice Sunday, and nearly said goodbye to their tremendous start, before ultimately finishing off the Miami Dolphins, 31-21.   For a while it looked like it could have been a Ryan Fitzhattrick. Fitzpatrick threw for one score, bullied his way into the end zone on the ground, and nearly threw for a third, only to be disencha…

Bills

The Bills Mafia invaded Smashville on Sunday and witnessed a titanic, ice-breaking win by their beloved Bills. The victory separated Buffalo from Tennessee in the premature playoff race, and steered the Bills to a 4-1 record; now tied for second in the AFC.  Improbable hero Duke Williams came out of obscurity and off the practice squad to the delight of his legion of sy…

Bills

The Buffalo Bills went head-to-head against the New England Patriots on Sunday, tête-à-tête between two headstrong coaches and were ultimately knocked out by a fierce fourth-quarter helmet-to-helmet hit. Let’s get the crud out early. Josh Allen threw three interceptions, two of which were horrible ideas and passes, and one just horrendous pass. A special teams snafu com…

Bills

The guy has got game, especially when the game is on the line. Bills quarterback Josh Allen has five comeback victories in 13 starts he has completed. And on many plays, that game is Madden. Allen’s highlight plays, using his Gumby legs and arm, are often hard to believe on second and third viewings even when you know exactly what happened already. It is the seemingl…

Bills

Josh Allen was not given the key to the city of Buffalo; Josh Allen has the key to the city. Drafted seventh overall in 2018, Allen just showed up with it the next day. The Bills quarterback seems to be the embodiment, correct button pusher, and possess most all of the qualities we want in our sports stars: blue collar and red-blooded; gifted and gutsy; a high-flying un…

Bills

Each year, even veteran, established NFL squads claim it is a different team, year, and often, result. For younger, inexperienced bad teams, they make that claim even more often. But the new, New Era Buffalo Bills have transformed their lineup and makeup in dramatic fashion, and the result was a drama-filled sea change in momentum and ultimate, unexpected win on the road a…

The NFL draft, like opening day and the Super Bowl, should be a national holiday. Perhaps three days are too much for the NFL, but we can punt Presidents, Labor and Columbus Day, and I love me some veterans but combine Veterans with Memorial Day, and yes, I know the difference. This is Draft Day, dammit! I hate to even call it "Draft Day" after that awful movie that sho…

Bills

I attended all four of the Buffalo Bills’ Super Bowl games, and regardless of the eventual gut-wrench, the buildup – the host city’s preparation, layout and staging, and its bars and locals partaking — was always far more attention-grabbing and better than the product on the field, especially the excruciating halftime shows. Minneapolis killed it, in the good way. Atlanta …

A Bills fan’s offseason is not unlike a Bills player’s. Sure, you take a short while off to clear your head and restore your body. Last year was brutal and took its toll. You have been doing this forever and each offseason is a tad tougher. But the Bills and Bills football is in your DNA and you can’t wait to jump right back in, like the Polar Bear Club. You want to …

Bills

After Josh Allen had just run over, around and under the previous three Bills opponents for historic quarterback rushing yardage, the Detroit Lions decided to tinker with their base defense — tailor it to stop Josh from running — make him be a sharpshooter and attack through the air with his rifle arm instead — all by using a spy (or spies) to contain rather than stop him.…

Analysis

Outside of The Josh Allen Experiment, the 2018 Bills season is likely to be remembered for its up and down, in and out, don’t know if we are good or bad, coming or going fluctuations. Sometimes we are riding sky high; sometimes seem on life support. The Dr. Poyer and Micah Hyde back and forth, two-headed monster, is tough to watch and even tougher to get a handle on. …
