Five senior citizens were added to the death toll from Covid-19 in Niagara County on Wednesday, bringing its total number of deaths related to the virus to 57.
The victims, all of whom died during the past several days, were women aged 71, 75 and 89, and men aged 70 and 75. All five had pre-existing health conditions.
Only four of the county's 57 victims have been younger than 60. According to the state Health Department, 34 of the victims have died in nursing homes.
Newfane Supervisor Timothy R. Horanburg said no new death certificates have been received from Newfane Rehabilitation and Health Care Center since Saturday. State figures show 24 residents have died of Covid-19 there.
The county also announced 22 newly confirmed cases of the Covid-19 virus, bringing its total confirmed cases to 918. As of Wednesday, 16 virus patients were in hospitals, a figure which has been unchanged for the past few days. The county said 568 patients have recovered and 277 are isolated at home.
