Belle E. DeBruin, former president of the Sisterhood at Temple Beth El of Greater Buffalo, died May 13 in Elderwood Amherst after a long illness. She was 95.
Born Belle E. Zobel in St. Catharines, Ont., she came to Buffalo with her family as a child and was a 1942 graduate of East High School.
Working as a bank clerk after high school, she was attending a wedding when she met Gerald DeBruin, then a baritone soloist at Temple Beth El. They were married on Nov. 8, 1947.
A resident of North Buffalo and the Town of Tonawanda, she worked for several years in the jewelry department at Jenss department store in the Boulevard Mall.
Mrs. DeBruin was honored for her work with many committees at Temple Beth El. Her husband, who died in 2015, was cantor at the synagogue for more than 50 years.
She enjoyed reading, traveling and listening to Jewish music.
Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Wisniewski; two sons, Larry and Jeff; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held May 15 in Temple Beth El Cemetery, Cheektowaga.
