WUTV to re-air 'The Masked Singer' Saturday after Wednesday's fiasco

Alan Pergament

After last Wednesday night’s fiasco on WUTV, in which the hit Fox reality show “The Masked Singer” hit local technical difficulties, the affiliate has been given permission by the network to rerun the two-hour semifinal episode at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The episode also is available On Demand. But if you DVR it Saturday, you can speed through all the commercials that can't be fast forwarded On Demand.

The season finale of the series airs at 8 p.m. this Wednesday, a night after Fox runs a “Road to the Finals” episode.

At the end of every episode of the hit Fox reality show before a celebrity is about to be unmasked, the studio audience and judges scream, “Take it off, take it off.”

In Western New York last Wednesday, viewers undoubtedly were screaming, “Put it on, put it on.”’

That’s because the picture on WUTV was replaced by a graphic on a dark screen for much of the two-hour show that started at 8 p.m.  The graphic explained there were technical problems with the channel.

It couldn’t have happened at a worse time for WUTV, which has been experiencing picture problems for months.

After all, “The Masked Singer” is Fox’s most popular program.

Nick Magnini, the general manager of WUTV, explained via text Thursday that the station’s control center is in Dayton and the fiber connection between the Ohio city and Buffalo went down.

“This was a technical issue that impacted WUTV from approximately 7 p.m. to 8:40 p.m.,” wrote Magnini. “Our tech team fixed it and we were back up. Even the best systems occasionally have issues.”

In addition to missing key parts of “The Masked Singer,” WUTV viewers weren’t able to see the 7 p.m. program “Judge Judy.”

Spoiler alert: The contestant eliminated wearing a Rhino mask was Barry Zito, who had a 165-143 record in 15 seasons as a Major League Baseball pitcher and now is a singer.
