The Mid-American Conference continues to implement cost-cutting measures as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the latest will impact football.
A MAC spokesperson confirmed a report by the Toledo Blade on Friday that the MAC will limit its travel rosters for its 12 football programs for the 2020-21 school year. MAC football programs will have 70-player travel rosters, instead of 76 players. Hotel stays for football teams the night before a home game will also be eliminated.
The University at Buffalo is a member of the MAC.
The cost-cutting measures come three days after the MAC announced that it will make major changes to its postseason format for several sports, including eliminating postseason tournaments in eight sports, because of the coronavirus pandemic. Conference champions will be determined by the regular season in field hockey, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, women’s lacrosse, softball and baseball.
In men's and women's basketball, the MAC also will move to a 20-game conference schedule, eliminate divisions and have reformatted tournaments. The MAC also altered championship formats for nine other sports. The changes will begin in the 2020-21 school year.
