Helping Hamburg's health care heroes

Whether it's a doctor working 12-hour shifts or nurses working in the emergency room, Hamburg is recognizing its "Health Care Heroes."

Two community organizations, Imagine Hamburg and the Village Business Advisory Council, have donated $2,000 apiece to start the program, which provides gift bags to those nominated.

The program provides "a way for our community to say thank you to health care workers and front line first responders while also supporting our many local businesses that have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020," according to the Hamburg Health Care Heroes website.

Among other things, the bags include gift cards to be used in local stores now, or when they reopen, said Mary Ann Meegan of Imagine Hamburg.

Nominations and donations to defray the cost of the gift bags can be made on the Hamburg Health Care Heroes website, which also includes a brief description of each hero. The presentations are made by volunteers, some dressed in costumes such as a giant teddy bear, minions and a dinosaur.
