Covid-19 victim from Lancaster honored with Vietnam service pin

U.S. Navy veteran Jose Rivera of Lancaster who died April 24 from Covid-19, will be honored with two posthumous awards, said Casimiro D. Rodriguez Sr., president of the Hispanic Heritage Council of WNY.

Rep. Brian Higgins, D-Buffalo, will award the Vietnam Commemorative Service Pin for Rivera’s service in the U.S. Navy from 1973 to 1979. Higgins plans to contact the Department of Defense to request a full set of medals earned by Rivera during his service.

Erie County Legislator Frank J. Todaro of the 8th District will present a memorial proclamation Thursday honoring Rivera for his service to the Cheektowaga and Lancaster communities during the legislative session.

Todaro will also present the memorial proclamation to Rivera's widow, Maureen, during a distance presentation attended by the Riveras' neighbors and former neighbors over the weekend.
