Reporters' Notebook: May 1, 2020 – Food drive on the fly

OLAF FUB SEZ: According to best-selling British novelist Marie Corelli, born on this date in 1855, “I never married because there was no need. I have three pets at home which answer the same purpose as a husband. I have a dog which growls every morning, a parrot which swears all afternoon and a cat that comes home late at night.”

SELF STARTER – Emily Hoerner, a senior at John F. Kennedy High School in Cheektowaga, is holding a drive-through food drive from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of METTS Dance Studio in Seneca Ridge Plaza, 3529 Seneca St., West Seneca, where she has been studying dance since she was 3.

In addition to non-perishable food items, she’ll accept personal protective equipment and homemade masks.

“Once collected,” she says, “I will find out who needs these things the most.”

POWER OF PRAYER – The Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity invite the community to join them in a collective moment of prayer for those affected by Covid-19 every day at 10 a.m., beginning today.

The bell tower at their convent at Stella Niagara near Lewiston will ring at that time daily as the sisters offer prayers for all first responders and health care workers, everyone whose lives have been touched by the virus and for an end to the pandemic.

“We are taking our powerhouse of prayer from the inside to the outside,” leaders of the motherhouse said.
