An 80-year-old man with a pre-existing medical condition was the 23rd person to die from Covid-19 in Niagara County, the county Health Department announced Wednesday.
All but three of the county's novel coronavirus fatalities have been over age 60, and all but two had underlying health conditions before catching the virus.
The county also announced 12 new confirmed cases of Covid-19, bring its total to 440 since the virus outbreak began. As of Wednesday morning, 24 were in hospitals, 182 were isolated at home and 211 were deemed to have recovered.
The county said 425 residents have successfully completed quarantines since the pandemic started, and 205 are quarantined now.
As of Monday, the most recent update, 2,260 Niagara County residents had received Covid-19 tests, and 17.1% were positive. The number of tests will rise with Wednesday's opening of an appointment-only testing site at Niagara County Community College in Sanborn.
