WARN notices show the pain of widespread job cuts

The parade of companies laying off or furloughing workers because of the coronavirus pandemic and business shutdown continued into mid-April, with 28 more Western New York companies filing paperwork with the state in the past few weeks.

The companies who submitted notices of mass layoffs under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act range from manufacturers and retailers, to hotels and limousine companies, to home health care agencies and dentists. More than 1,000 workers are affected.

All cited the Covid-19 pandemic as the cause.

However, not all businesses are required to comply with the WARN Act, and many may simply not be doing so because of the suddenness of the closures, often mandated as part of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's New York PAUSE initiative.
