Hertel Avenue bar shut down for hosting 'unofficial happy hour'

Gabels, a longtime North Buffalo bar, is the latest to be closed by the Erie County Department of Health for hosting an "unofficial happy hour" on the premises in violation of state orders.

"We're getting lots of calls into our call center with regards to bars that are operating illegally ā€“ we call them speakeasies ā€“ or they're having unofficial happy hours," said County Executive Mark Poloncarz, "and someone who lived in the neighborhood near Gabels called and said they're doing this every day."

A Health Department inspector went in undercover to the bar at 1285 Hertel Ave., then returned with Erie County sheriff's deputies.

"They cleared the house and were issued an order from me to close," said Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein.

The bar was also reported to the state Liquor Authority. A spokesman said the authority intends to bring charges against Gabels.

The county previously shut down Swannie House in Buffalo and AJ's Clarence Hollow in Clarence.
