BreadHive will close, for now: 'This wasn't an easy call'

Breadhive Bakery and Cafe will close indefinitely next week, the company announced Saturday.

"While this wasn't an easy call, and after a thoughtful discussion with lots of passion on both sides, we decided to pause in order to regroup and come back stronger with an actual plan," the company said on Twitter. "We're not sure how long this will take because there are things we want to do while shut down including just resting."

The worker-owned co-op has been baking exclusively for wholesale customers in recent weeks. Operating in the current climate has been "overwhelming," the company said.

"What a confusing time to try and operate a small food business. There's so much we don't know: how long is this going to take? What are the safest ways to operate? What kind of aid will workers & our business be able to access?" Breadhive wrote.

Friday will be the company's last day baking.

BreadHive opened in 2014 on Connecticut Street in the Lower West Side.
