The number of Erie County residents who have died due to Covid-19 grew by seven as of Wednesday night, while the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases increased by 110.
The total number of Erie County residents with confirmed cases so far during the pandemic swelled to 1,345, according to figures released by the county. There had been 46 Covid-19-related deaths in the county as of Wednesday night.
The latest figures showed 221 people with Covid-19 were hospitalized as of Monday in the county, with 119 of those people in intensive care, County Executive Mark Poloncarz said. One-hundred thirteen of those in intensive care had an "airway assist," Poloncarz said.
Based on modeling done at the University at Buffalo, the predicted peak of cases and hospitalization in Western New York is "still weeks off," Poloncarz said.
In terms of the races of those Erie County residents who have died as of Wednesday afternoon, 15 were black and 30 were white, according to county officials.
Three-hundred forty-nine Erie County residents who were diagnosed with Covid-19 have recovered as of Wednesday night. According to statistics released by the county, 957 individuals were in isolation as of Wednesday afternoon.
Of the 1,335 confirmed cases as of Wednesday afternoon, almost 52% were women, according to the county, while nearly 55% of cases were in individuals age 50 and over.
There are apparent indications of some slight demographic shifts.
As of last week, data based on the county's first 499 cases showed men represented 55% of confirmed cases; nearly 56% of Erie County's confirmed cases at that point were in people younger than 50.
The numbers released Wednesday come one day after Erie County set a new mark for the largest increase in deaths in one day so far during the pandemic, as officials Tuesday announced nine more deaths.
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said Wednesday that the number of people statewide who died Tuesday was 779, also the state's largest one-day mark so far.
Niagara County officials announced 12 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday, bringing the county's total to 155. Niagara County officials announced the county's first Covid-19-related death on Tuesday. The total of confirmed cases across all of Western New York was 1,661.
The number of people being hospitalized in Erie County is still growing, with roughly half of those patients being treated in intensive care or with a ventilator.
