ECMC asks the public for donations of protective masks

Erie County Medical Center foresees the possibility of running short on protective masks for its staff, the hospital reported in a Covid-19 update Wednesday – and is asking the public to donate any unused masks they have.

The update said that ECMC currently has about 1½ weeks worth of protective masks on hand, is trying to conserve them and has ordered more.

“Without guarantees of their delivery date,” the update stated, “we are asking for donations of masks.”

Any unused N95 or non-N95 masks will be accepted. Especially needed are regular and small 3M 1860 models.

To contact the hospital, call 898-3844 or email

The update also noted that ECMC’s lab is awaiting reagents and test kits to begin testing for the coronavirus.

According to the update, the hospital has already submitted a Covid-19 Surge Plan to the state Department of Health, detailing how it will expand bed capacity by 50% and how it might be able to increase capacity by 100%.

A Covid-19 inpatient unit already has been established, the update noted.
