Buffalo police recruits help at city parks, Broadway Market

Recruits with the Buffalo Police Department are not training currently due to the Covid-19 outbreak – but they're still serving the public.

Buffalo's 42 recruits have been divided into teams and redeployed to city parks and the Broadway Market to assist with police services, Police Capt. Jeff Rinaldo said during a media conference call Monday to provide the latest update on Covid-19 and how Buffalo is responding.

"They are ensuring that people know what the rules are," including social distancing and a state order for people not to gather publicly in groups of 10 or more, said Rinaldo.

After Erie County's Law Enforcement Training Academy temporarily suspended its program at Erie Community College North Campus due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the recruits were sent back to their respective law enforcement departments, Rinaldo said.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo cancelled in-person classes two weeks ago at all 64 campuses of the State University of New York – including community colleges – as well as the City University of New York.
