NOLAN - Christa Paul Died on March 14, 2020 at the Buffalo General Medical Center. She was 87. Christa was born in Berlin, Germany, to Swedish parents, Dr. Bengt Paul and Hildegard Koenig, on January 14, 1933. She grew up during the Second World War, and for her safety was sent away from home from eight years of age until she was 12 to live with family friends in Switzerland and relatives in Sweden. In rural Switzerland and Sweden during these years, she took long walks in the countryside and developed her life-long love of nature, which she shared with her children. Her family settled in Stockholm after the war. Christa traveled to Yale University in 1955, where she worked in an immunology lab, and met Dr. James Paul Nolan, Jr. They were married in Stockholm in 1956. Before moving to Dr. Nolan's hometown of Buffalo, they lived in New Haven and Honolulu. Once her children were school age, Christa obtained a Masters in Epidemiology from the University of Buffalo. Her career in public health reflected a dedication to public service. She worked on the Love Canal Task Force while still in school to study the impact of the toxic exposure on that community. Once she graduated, Christa worked at the Erie County Health Department, and she and her colleagues reported the first AIDS case in Western New York to the CDC in the early 1980s. She later started the Patient Advocate Program at Roswell Park Memorial Hospital in the late 1980s, and worked tirelessly as the first Patient Advocate at the institution. Christa was a Master Gardener who loved gardening and shared this love with her four children, who all became gardeners. She created and maintained a beautiful garden in Snyder for more than 40 years. She read the New York Times every day, and was engaged and mentally sharp until the day of her death. Christa will be remembered for her loving devotion to her four children and seven grandchildren. She was a strong person, who loved her family and friends deeply. Christa's tendency to tell you what she thought was always tempered by her deep kindness, loyalty and caring. She was always there to help friends when tragedy struck. And she always looked forward to gathering her children, their partners, and grandchildren together each year for various family events. The family spent many happy summer vacations down island on Martha's Vineyard, which she cherished, and in recent years her family and friends often visited Christa and Jim during the winter in Florida. Christa is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Dr. James Nolan, and their four children, Lisa Ann Nolan (Jerzy Kieres) of Clarence, NY, James P. Nolan (Isabella Bannerman) of Hasting-on-Hudson, NY, Christopher John Nolan (Dr. Angela Keen) of Salt Lake City, UT, and Thomas Bengt Nolan (Prasant Nukalapati) of San Francisco, CA. She also is survived by her seven grandchildren, Edward and George Nolan, Sam and Stu Nolan, Christine Kieres, and Charlie and Finn Willits-Musell.
