A suburban Rochester man who reportedly was upset about the impeachment of President Trump has been arrested for allegedly phoning death threats to New York Sen. Charles Schumer and California Rep. Adam Schiff, U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy Jr. announced Wednesday.
Salvatore Lippa II, 57, of Greece, has been charged with threatening to assault and murder a federal official on account of the performance of their official duties and interstate communication of a threat.
He faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Lippa allegedly left threatening telephone voicemails at Schiff’s office in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 23 and at Schumer’s Albany office on Feb. 4.
Investigators said they traced the calls back to Lippa’s phone. According to prosecutors, Lippa admitted to special agents from the U.S. Capitol Police that he made the calls because he was upset about the impeachment proceedings.
