Recent traveler to China under voluntary quarantine

A Brooklyn man who was apprehended at the Peace Bridge and held at the Erie County Holding Center for criminal charges in Pennsylvania before the charges were dropped is under voluntary quarantine at the Erie County Health Department as a "medium risk" for exposure to the coronavirus.

A health department spokesman said the department was not commenting on the disposition of any individuals under voluntary quarantine.

Kevin Qiu, 42, was taken into custody Wednesday while crossing the border after returning from a trip to China, according to Sheriff Timothy Howard. He was wanted on a bench warrant out of Pennsylvania for receiving stolen property and other charges.

He waived an extradition hearing and was expected to be taken to Chester County where he was wanted. But Chester County authorities said they no longer would be taking custody of him.

Qiu hasn't exhibited coronavirus symptoms. His attorney said Qiu had not traveled to the Wuhan province in China, the epicenter of the outbreak, during his recent trip.
