Jon Rivera gets Democratic nod for Assembly

Erie County Democrats endorsed Jon Rivera for the 149th Assembly District Thursday.

Rivera, an administrator in the Erie County Department of Public Works who was born and raised on the West Side, was one of the first Democrats to announce his candidacy for the seat held by Sean Ryan. Ryan, a Buffalo Democrat, is running for a state Senate seat.

"This is not about top-down politics, or even bottom-up politics," Rivera said in a statement. "This is about unifying everyone around a singular progressive, practical message, to continue to strengthen our community and make sure no one is left behind as our resurgence continues."

The district includes a section of Buffalo, Lackawanna and the Town of Hamburg.

Bryan Ball, chair of Stonewall Democrats of Western New York and Erie County Democratic Committee City of Buffalo zone chairman, said if he wins, Rivera would be the only Latino in the state Assembly north of New York City.
