Lancaster closes Heritage Trail due to black bear sighting

The Heritage Trail in Lancaster has been closed due to a black bear sighting, according to Lancaster police.

The trail will be temporarily closed between Cemetery and Pavement roads. Authorities said the closing was a precaution following the sighting of a black bear by a resident in the area of Pavement and Nichter roads. That sighting was verified by a patrol officer, who located tracks in the area, police said.

The Heritage Trail travels east-west from Walter Winter Drive to Town Line Road, built on 4 miles of roadbed of the former Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. The bike path opened in October 2010.

The Town of Lancaster Recreation Department will be placing barricades at Pavement and Cemetery roads. Police said the Department of Environmental Conservation also has been advised of the sighting.

If residents see a bear, police urge them to not approach it and to call the Lancaster Police Department at 683-2800.
