The emergency department at TLC/Lake Shore Health Care Center campus in Irving will close indefinitely starting at 7 p.m. Sunday – due to a lack of available staffing.
A paramedic-staffed ambulance will be stationed at the Irving location to receive anyone who arrives seeking emergency care.
Emergency medical personnel would initiate treatment and then transport patients to Brooks Memorial Hospital's emergency room in Dunkirk.
The TLC campus in Irving closed Jan. 1, but the site was required to have an active emergency room while a behavioral health unit was still open, said Dennis McCarthy, a spokesman for Brooks-TLC Hospital System.
The last patients in the behavioral health unit were discharged this week.
Cheryl Marino, an 1199SEIU organizer for TLC/Lake Shore employees, said in a statement: “We are extremely disappointed with TLC Lake Shore’s decision to ignore the Behavioral Health Services Advisory Council’s recommendation by expediting the closure of a needed emergency department and behavioral health unit this weekend. As health care workers who care so deeply for our patients, it is heartbreaking to think about the devastating impact this closure will have. What a terrible way to treat this community."
