Head-on crash in East Pembroke claims life of Akron woman

An Akron woman died from injuries she suffered in a head-on crash about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday on Route 5 in East Pembroke, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Patricia L. Dzienciol, 50, was pronounced dead in Erie County Medical Center, where she was taken by Mercy Flight.

According to the report, Dzienciol was westbound in a 2015 Nissan Rogue when she collided with an eastbound 1997 Mercury that had crossed into her lane. Her SUV left the road, hit a mailbox and overturned in a ditch. East Pembroke volunteer firefighters were called to extricate her from her vehicle.

The other driver, identified as Kathleen A. Swanekamp, 84, of the Town of Tonawanda, was charged with failure to keep right and driving too fast for conditions. Investigators said the highway was ice and snow-covered at the time.

Swanekamp and two passengers in her car, Daniel Cordner, 42, and William Danek, 26, were taken to ECMC with injuries that were not life-threatening, the Sheriff’s Office said.
