Canisius hockey stays hot, tops Sacred Heart

Canisius (6-12-4, 5-7-4 Atlantic Hockey) ran its unbeaten streak to eight games with a 5-2 victory over Sacred Heart (14-8-2, 13-6-1 AHA) at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn.

Freshman Keaton Mastrodonato scored twice in the first three minutes of the game for Canisius. The second goal was shorthanded. Matt Long made it 3-1 midway through the first period. Freshman Ryan Miotto made it 4-2 at 15:25 of the second and Nick Hutchsion scored a power-play goal at 12:01 of the third.

Freshman goalie Jacob Barczewski matched his season’s high with 33 saves for Canisius.

On Friday, Air Force (7-10-4, 7-6-4-3 AHA) scored two power-play goals in the third period and defeated Niagara, 4-3, in their Atlantic Hockey game in Colorado.

Jon Hill tied the scored at 1-1 in the first period for Niagara (4-13-4, 4-7-4). Justin Kendall’s power-play goal for the Purple Eagles made it 2-2 in the third. Alex Truscott of Niagara made it 3-3 with a short-handed score, but Air Force got the deciding goal with 4 seconds left on the same penalty to win it.
