January deer hunting in CNY

The regular Southern Zone big-game seasons may be closed, but there are some opportunities to put a tag on a whitetail deer. In Tompkins County, there is a special area called the Deer Management Focus Area, offering hunters nearly 60,000 acres of land from which to hunt. It was created in 2012 to help control the deer populations in the Ithaca area that have been overpopulated. To qualify for this hunt, hunters must register with the DMFA program. They can download a permit, carcass tags and a hunting activity log from http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/82382.html. There also is a printable map.

For this January season, hunters may take up to two antlerless deer per day using any hunting implement that is legal during any other deer season at the site where they are hunting. Hunters must carry a DMFA permit and carcass tags. They also must record their deer hunting activity on the log provided. It must be submitted to the Department of Environmental Conservation by Feb. 7.

Registration open for Southtowns Walleye Outfitters Fair

Southtowns Walleye Association of WNY has scheduled its popular 2020 Outfitters Fair for Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its clubhouse located at 5895 Southwestern Blvd., Hamburg. While it’s still a long way off, the important thing to note is that the club started accepting reservations for tables as of Dec. 15 and they usually go fast. Tables are just $25 each and there are a limited number available.

With free entry and free parking, hosted by a club with more than 1,000 members, it makes sense to secure your spot early to sell your new and used hunting and fishing equipment. No guns or ammunition are allowed for this event. If you have any questions, call 796-5372 or 864-2938.
