From 'Elf' to 'Jimmy Dean' and more: It's closing time for local plays

Several well-reviewed local theatrical productions are having their final performances this weekend.

"Mr. Popper's Penguins," a puppet-filled musical from the classic children's book, finishes its run with shows at 1 p.m. Dec. 21 and 22 in the Allendale Theatre (203 Allen St.). Tickets for the show, recommended for ages 5 and older, start at $15, at theatreofyouth.org. [Read Randy Schiff's review.]

Other holiday shows wrapping up are MusicalFare's "Elf," which has sold out its shows at the company's theater at Daemen College, and its production of "Christmas Over the Tavern" at the more spacious Shea's 710 Theatre, where some seats are available.

Two shows that earned four-star reviews also conclude: "Come Back to the Five & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean," at New Phoenix Theatre (95 Johnson Park), has shows at 8 p.m. Dec. 19, 20 and 21, with "pay what you can night" every Thursday; visit newphoenixtheatre.org.

Raices Theatre's incredible "El Coqui Espectacular and the Bottle of Doom" has four more shows, at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 19 and at 8 p.m. Dec. 20-22, in the Manny Fried Playhouse (255 Great Arrow Ave., third floor). Read Ben Siegel's four-star review.
