Senior Lauren Nawojski set a St. Mary’s of Lancaster record in the Lancers’ 55-41 win over Maple Grove in the Southwestern Invitational at Southwestern High on Saturday.
Nawojski posted eight rebounds to give her a career total of 568, breaking Ciara Rosten’s old record of 562. The record-breaking rebound came with 3:03 left in the second quarter off a missed free throw.
She was honored at halftime with a ceremonial game ball for the feat, coach Anthony Ottomano said.
Nawojski also logged 10 points for St. Mary’s. Her sister, sophomore Margaret, had nine. Shay Ciezki led the team with 11 points and added eight assists.
Will East wins at Lockport
Senior Cal Shifflet was named tournament MVP as Williamsville East topped Newfane, 79-54, in the championship round of the Lockport Rotary Tournament at Lockport High School.
Shifflet “did a little bit of everything” for the Flames in the words of coach RJ Killinger. He had 25 points, five rebounds, four assists and a pair of blocks in the win over the Panthers.
It was the second tournament MVP award for the 6-foot-4 guard. Shifflet was honored in 2017 during his sophomore season. It was also the second tournament championship for Will East in three years.
Kevin Early (All-Tournament Team) and Max Schneider (Mr. Hustle Award) also earned accolades for East. Early had 17 points on Saturday while Schneider put up 20 and had six assists.
The Flames got out to a 48-23 lead by halftime. Most of the points came off layups, Killinger said, but there were several 3-pointers.
“Our confidence is up, we just got to continue to work hard and stay healthy,” he said.
