A late Army goal spoiled a Canisius comeback and the Griffs’ hockey team was defeated, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at the LECOM Harborcenter.
Eric Butte scored the game-winning goal for the Black Knights 13 minutes into the third period, breaking a 2-2 tie.
Lee Lapid and Ryan Miotto scored the only goals for Canisius (2-10-0, 1-5-0 AHA). The Griffs have lost four straight games and were swept in the two-game series by Army.
Michael Wilson put the visitors up first 21 seconds into the second period. Four minutes later, Zach Evancho made it 2-0 in Army’s favor.
Canisius began to battle back after that. Lapid was able to find the back of the net during a scrum in front of the crease to make it 2-1.
Miotto tied it on a breakaway down the right side when Canisius was killing off a 5-on-3 shorthanded situation after checking from behind and high sticking penalties.
Both teams tightened up before Butte gave Army the lead for good.
Up next, Canisius will be on the road at defending Atlantic Hockey champion AIC on Dec. 6-7 for a two-game series.
Niagara falls in extra time
For the second night in a row, Niagara needed extra time in its game with Air Force.
Unlike Friday night, there was no overtime magic. The Purple Eagles were defeated by the Falcons, 2-1, after a 3-on-3 overtime period.
Zack Mirageas had the game-winning goal for Air Force (5-8-0, 5-4-1-1) 2:03 into the 3-on-3 period. The two teams had played a full-strength overtime period earlier.
Sophomore Brandon Stanley had the only goal for Niagara, his third tally of the season.
It tied the game at one goal each midway through the second period. Air Force’s Carter Ekberg had put the Falcons up earlier in the second.
The Purple Eagles fell to 4-8-2 overall. They’ll take some time off before traveling to AIC for a two-game series on Dec. 13-14.
