Lockport's Sydney Nowicki leads WNY contingent at Fed cross country meet

Section VI Class A champion Sydney Nowicki, a junior from Lockport, finished eighth in the girls race for the second consecutive year and Lucas Beyer of Canisius was 27th among the boys Saturday in leading the Western New York contingent at the New York State Federation Cross Country Championships at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls.

Nowicki ran the 5K course in 18 minutes, 53.9 seconds in relatively balmy 45-degree weather.
Beyer, a senior who was runner-up to Evan Hilbert of St. Joe’s in the Monsignor Martin championships, covered the 5K course in 16:44.1

Hilbert was fourth among the Western New York runners in the Fed meet, which draws athletes from the NYSPHSAA, CHSAA, PSAL and the Association of Independent Schools. Jerad Hediger of Pioneer finished 32nd, Kyle Urban of Alden was 42nd and Ronan McDonald of Randolph was 46th.

Sam Lawler of Pittsford Mendon was the winner in 15:57.2 among 249 boys entered.

The girls winner was Katelyn Tuohy of North Rockland, who climaxed her brilliant career in state competition with her second Fed championship. She also won in 2017 over the same course. The 2018 Fed run was canceled because heavy snow blanketed the course a few days before the race.

Tuohy, who has won national cross-country races, was fifth in the Fed run as an eighth-grader in 2015, second in 2016 to Kelsey Chmiel of Saratoga Springs before finishing ahead of runner-up Chmiel in the 2017 race.

The closest WNY runner after Nowicki was Emily Brown of Fredonia, who finished 48th among 248 starters and Sonya Krezmien of Springville, who was 50th. Holly Arrison of Nichols was 68th.

Albany-area teams dominated the team scoring. Saratoga Springs won its 23rd girls title. Tuohy led North Rockland to a second-place finish.

Nardin Academy, led by MK Hartigan’s 92nd place, finished 25th of 27 teams. Nardin was the only WNY girls team entry.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake took the boys team title. Beyer led Canisius, the only WNY team, to 25th among 27 boys teams.
