Elmwood Village Charter School wants to put on a two-story addition to its 40 Days Park building that would be elevated and cantilevered over a parking lot.
That would give it more administrative and support space on the first floor, plus three classrooms for music and dance on the second level.
The overhang would serve as a covered porch for children waiting for pickup and a sheltered corridor to the playground.
The building's height and materials would be the same and there's no expansion of enrollment or staffing. So school officials and architects didn't expect much trouble at the Buffalo Planning Board Monday.
But they didn't consult neighbors, who didn't know about the plan until they read about it in The Buffalo News.
"There was no attempt at a community meeting, no attempt at dialogue," said neighbor Mary Simpson. "We don't know anything about this project, because we were not informed."
Board members said they didn't have any objections to the project design – but tabled it, until the school can meet with neighbors.
