East Aurora wins Class B state title in girls cross country

East Aurora won the girls Class B New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship Saturday in Plattsburgh.

East Aurora had all five runners within the top 20 among scoring competitors to total 50 points and handily beat runner Pearl River, which had 76 points.

Sophomore Megan McLaughlin was fourth overall in 17:06.5 and senior Kris Ertel was sixth in 17:30.5.

Junior Geneva Green (18:04.3) was 27th, seventh-grader Emilia O'Leary (18:13.5) was 33rd and senior Maggie McLaughlin (18:34.2) was 45th. Samantha Hulme, (19:01.2) and Celia Cocca (19:01.7) also represented East Aurora.

In the same race, Mallory Grubb of Amherst was fifth overall in 17:27.5, Marisa Swiatek from Williamsville East was 21st in 17:53.4, Kayla Schmidt from Williamsville South was 26th in 18:04.1, Nicole Kuehner from Iroquois was 49th in 18:43 and Hailey Kliszak from Lake Shore was 53rd in 18:49.6.

Section won the Class B meet with 269 points, followed by Section VIII with 335 and Section II with 367.

Class A girls

Lockport's Sydney Nowicki, a two-time All-Western New York Runner of the Year, finished 16th in 17:08.6, three spots better than she did a year ago in the state meet. The Section VI team finished eighth overall.

Orchard Park, led by eighth-grader Noel Barlette, finished ninth in the team scores. Barlette was 58th overall in 18:26.8.

Madison Mariani, West Seneca West, 19:22.6; 91. Olivia Ippolitto, Orchard Park, 19:22.7; 96. Emma Eisenhauer, Orchard Park, 19:49.9; 98. Jillian O'Rourke, Orchard Park, 19:56.9; 101. Allison Blake, Orchard Park, 20:10.0.; 105. Sophia Machowski, Orchard Park, 21:19.6.

Class C girls

Four Section VI runners finished in the top 20 as the section finished second overall. Fredonia senior Emily Brown was 12th in 17.49, followed by Sonya Krezmien of Springville Griffin in 13th in 17:58.5 and Lauren Wagner of Akron in 18:00.3. Angelina Napoleon of Allegany-Limestone was 18th in 18:09.6.

Brown improved on her performance from last year when she was 17th.

Newfane, the Section VI representative, finished third overall, led by eighth-grader Kylie Bowman, who was 29th overall in 18:28.1. Newfane freshman Catalena Ersing was 37th (18:39.1). Newfane seniors Vanessa Burkard and Lydia Chunco cracked the top 50. Burkard was 40th in 18:46.9 and Chunco was 45th in 18:57.5.

Other local finishers: 32. Anna Rickard, Roy-Hart, 18:35.4; 53. Leah Siegmann, Newfane, 19:19.5; 68. Shelby Nerber, Newfane, 19:34.2; 70. Marina Ersing, Newfane, 19:36.2.

Class D girls

Led by juniors Ava Crist and Christina Peppy, Maple Grove finished second in Class D with 55 points, five points behind champion Delhi. Section VI also finished third.

Crist was sixth overall in 18:08.3 and Peppy was 10th in 18:16.6. Sophomore Abby Brunanavas was 15th in 18:30.2.

The top local finisher was Clymer-Sherman-Panama senior Kylee Odell, who was fifth in 18:05.3.

Frewsburg's Acacia Barber was 14th overall in 18:27.7 to round the local top 20 finishers.
