Canadian resident pleads guilty in U.S. District Court to harboring illegal alien

A Canadian resident has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to harboring an illegal alien, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Prosecutors said 42-year-old Jason O. Garcia of Vaughan, Ont., faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison when he is sentenced on March 20.

According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan A. Tokash, Garcia attempted to enter the United States Aug. 5 in a commercial truck at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. When asked if anyone else was present inside the truck, Garcia replied no, prosecutors said.

Following a primary inspection, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers discovered that Garcia was harboring an individual with a Chilean passport.

A records check later revealed that the Chilean citizen had been refused entry to the U.S. under the visa waiver program, for failing to disclose a previous arrest in Chile, prosecutors said.
