Hamburg seeking 'hometown heroes' for banner project

Hamburg's Hometown Heroes banner project is looking for participants for its eighth year.

Banners with a veteran's name and photo are hung from utility poles in the Village of Hamburg from April until just past Veterans Day. The family receives the banner at the end of the year as a keepsake.

The program can accept 40 applicants on a first-come, first-served basis. The veteran, from any branch of the Armed Forces, any rank at any time, must have been from or lived in Hamburg at some point in his or her life. The person can be alive or deceased. Once an application is accepted, a good quality photo in uniform is required to be submitted.

Banners cost $125, and donations in any amount are requested. Donations can be made out to Hamburg Hometown Heroes Banner Project, and sent c/o Sue Jantzi, 213 E. Prospect Ave., Hamburg, N.Y. 14075.

Applications are available at Hamburg village and town halls. They must be submitted by Feb. 1.
