1 dead, driver seriously injured following single-car crash

A passenger died while the driver suffered serious injuries in a single-car crash Wednesday afternoon off East Otto-Springville Road, according to the Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office.

The passenger, who has not been identified by authorities, was pronounced dead at the scene. Driver Terry S. Francis, 56, of the City of Tonawanda, was airlifted from the scene to Erie County Medical Center with serious injuries.

Authorities said the vehicle driven by Francis was northbound on East Otto-Springville Road in East Otto when Francis lost control. Deputies said the vehicle went off the east shoulder of the roadway, continued several hundred feet along a ditch, then went airborne over a creek, coming to rest in the embankment on the opposite side of the creek bed.

East Otto-Springville Road was shut down for several hours as investigators reconstructed the accident scene.

The investigation is ongoing, authorities said; no charges had been filed as of early Thursday.
