Fire captain pleads guilty to grand larceny in thefts from department

An East Amherst man pleaded guilty Wednesday in State Supreme Court to fourth-degree grand larceny and first-degree falsifying business records, according to the Erie County District Attorney's Office.

Prosecutors said 36-year-old Brent Dewitt admitted that, while working as a captain for the Swormville Fire Company between Nov. 1, 2018, and April 30, he stole $23,725 by making numerous unauthorized transactions with the department's credit card. The stolen funds were sent directly to Dewitt's personal PayPal account, and he attempted to cover up his criminal actions by submitting falsified receipts for the transactions, prosecutors added.

Swormville Fire was reimbursed by PayPal, which froze assets in Dewitt's account to cover the losses.

Prosecutors said Dewitt was placed on administrative leave once the theft was uncovered, and he has since been removed from his position.

Dewitt faces a maximum of four years in prison when sentenced Jan. 8. He was released on his own recognizance.
