$1M federal grant to assist with re-entry services for Erie County inmates

A $1 million federal grant will assist the Erie County's jail management division to fund re-entry services for inmates who have been identified with substance addiction or diagnosed with mental health disorders, Sheriff Timothy B. Howard announced Thursday.

The grant, awarded through the U.S. Justice Department's Second Chance Act program, will fund the program for four years, Howard said.

The jail management division will work with BestSelf and the University at Buffalo, along with the Sheriff's Office and county's department of mental health, to not only identify the inmates but address the problems they face with inadequate post-release treatment, along with high recidivism rates for inmates with both chemical dependency and mental health disorders.

As identified inmates near their release from incarceration, they will be directed to agencies that partner with the county and to programs where participants will receive services and attend programs after their release from jail, Howard added.
