Former Frontier and UB punter Jake Schum drafted by XFL

Jake Schum, the former Frontier Central High School and University at Buffalo punter, is heading back to pro football.

Schum was selected Wednesday on the second day of the XFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Vipers. The final phase of the two-day draft was for specialists and any remaining free agents. The XFL season begins in February.

Schum has been a member of the Browns, Jets, Buccaneers and Packers organizations since signing with Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2013 out of UB.

In an emotional Instagram post, Schum celebrated his return to football after his career was derailed by a back injury.

"Over two years ago I hurt my back and was told by top surgeons that I would need surgery or else I would never be the same," he wrote. "That I would never punt again .... Or have the mobility in my spine without pain. I decided to take a chance on myself... and said no to surgery. I belived in my mind, I could heal naturally. I didn't know exactly how or how long...but I decided to take the long road. The hard road. The painful road, both physically and mentally. One thing that never changed in my mind... I was going to punt again... And I was going to play football again. It's been a tough journey."

Schum said he is punting "better than ever" and "feeling the best I have ever felt."

THAT "BEING DRAFTED" FEELING! πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ’ͺ🏼 So grateful and incredibly happy to be part of the @xfl and play for the @xflvipers ! I get to play football again!! It has been way too long...I have been waiting/ready for too damn long to finally get my opportunity that I have felt I've deserved! This picture tells it all. All the emotion. Over two years ago I hurt my back and was told by top surgeons that I would need surgery or else I would never be the same... That I would never punt again.... Or have the mobility in my spine without pain. I decided to take a chance on myself... and said no to surgery. I belived in my mind, I could heal naturally..I didn't know exactly how or how long...but I decided to take the long road. The hard road. The painful road, both physically and mentally. One thing that never changed in my mind... I was going to punt again... And I was going to play football again. It's been a tough journey, as the mental part was the hardest thing I have ever dealt with. From not being able to bend over and put socks on in the morning, or tie my shoes without extreme nerve pain... To lifting and punting the ball better than ever - feeling the best I ever have.... I had a vision, stuck with the plan and knew one day I would do what I loved again. Thank you @xflvipers for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to show that I belong. That's all I have asked these past few years. I just want the chance... Because I've already been through it all with football, so there's nothing that is going to phase me. I'm ready to succeed. I'm ready to show what I can bring to the table. I'm ready to have fun and play the game of football again. Let's do this Tampa.... I'm back! πŸ’ͺ🏼🐍. . . . #nfl #xfl #punter #kicker #football #xfldraft #xflvipers #tampabay #tampabayvipers #motivated #motivationalpost #thecomeback #betterthanever #fitfam #gym #thegeniusbrand #begenius #whoop #vipers #muscle #strength #feelgoodpost #naturalhealing #natural #nosurgery #mindandbody #lawofattraction #mentallytough #mindhealth @nfl @xfl @xflvipers @osmgllc @menshealthmag @muscleandfitness @muscleandstrength @sportsillustrated @espn @sportscenter @thegeniusbrand
